Top 5 Upwork FAQs

How do I find the right skill and level of talent?

When you’re hiring for long-term projects, it’s important to find a freelancer who not only has the skills you need, but also a professional style that’s a great fit with your team.
A proper evaluation begins with the basics—the freelancer's proposal, skills, and feedback. Scan the freelancer’s profile on Upwork to screen for their Job Success Score, work history, portfolio and other “skill” factors. Then contact them to get the conversation going. Since you’ll be hiring for longer term, interview via live chat or video call to confirm they're a good fit.

How do I work with freelancers for my ongoing needs?

With Upwork you can choose to hire freelancers on an hourly or fixed-price basis.
For hourly work you can cap the weekly total, and grant permission if additional work is needed. For fixed-price, simply agree on milestones and release funds when each milestone is met. Either way, you get the peace of mind of Upwork Payment Protection.
Specifically, clients find that there are many projects ideally suited for long-term relationships. This includes the development and maintenance of your website or mobile app, customer service support for the phone or online assistance, and content writing for lead generation.

Is there a lot of handholding required?

Most clients find that the more you work with a freelancer, the more streamlined the flow of work becomes and the better results you’ll achieve.
As with any working relationship, the key to success is clear communication. When you first begin working with a new freelancer, it’s critical to set expectations. Once you’ve established a mutual understanding of what you want, it’s not uncommon to find that freelancers anticipate your needs and take initiative to deliver high-quality work.

Will online freelancers work well with my team?

Top freelancers are well versed in how to meet the needs of their remote clients. Whether they live on the other side of town or the other side of the globe, they have the skills to communicate well and support your team with specialized skills. Many clients tell us that they and their freelancers have developed strong bonds, as they share stories of their lives and livelihood.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge to post a job on Upwork, nor to review freelancer profiles and communicate with potential freelance candidates. Once a contract has been agreed upon, in most cases Upwork charges the freelancer a 10% service fee for all work.
As an example, if your freelancer submits a bid for $1,000, we will add 10% to the bid so you receive a bid of $1,100. When you pay your freelancer $1,100, we subtract our $100 fee and pass the remaining $1,000 on to the freelancer.

Upwork: Easy as One, Two, Three, Four

Top Upwork freelancers with specialized skills as well as select multi-talented people can extend the effectiveness of your team. The pool to choose from is now 14 million strong and one of them is bound to be perfect for your needs. Below is a screenshot of the 4 easy steps one needs to follow when you need a skilled online worker to help in making your business successful.

Step One is perhaps the hard part as choosing the right candidate for the job is critical to the successful execution of the tasks to grow the company. It is made easier with Upwork tools and assistance from Upwork teams depending on your plan. I would like to note that cheap is not always the way to go but sometimes you get lucky and the freelancer may be extremely adept in performing the task/s you need. Rankings and other qualifiers that point to some top freelancers do not necessarily mean other freelancers not on the list are inferior in skill, rather, these freelancers just did not hit the metrics chosen to garner a top spot.
Step Two gets you down into the thick of the action as you begin to work with your chosen freelancer and get things done to push the business onward and upward. You get to the action much faster than the conventional hiring process and these people are professionals. They are ready to get at it right at the gate. There are various tools available to make collaborating with your freelancer a breeze as well.
Step Three makes the billing process for your freelancers a snap as Upwork takes care of this bit so you do not have to. From time tracking, screenshots and up to the final bill, it is ensured that what you end up paying for is work that is billed correctly.
Step Four takes you to a successful end to the tasks and you can continue on, add on, hire more etc.

Many of the tasks needed to get a business growing need long term solutions and many freelancers are there to step up and get the job done. Below is a screenshot of some of the project types you can get done for the long term with the help of an Upwork Freelancer.
